Hirwaun in Rhondda Cynon Taff lies at the northwest end of the Cynon Valley, to the south of The Brecon Beacons national park. Just four miles from Aberdare, this historic, coalfield town has a long industrial history. From the C18th, this was the site of a renowned ironworks whose demand for fuel led to expansion in the mining industry. Indeed Hirwaun was the site of Tower colliery the last deep coal mine worked in Wales. Bought by the workers, it continued operation until early 2008. Hirwaun has strong associations with socialism - during the Merthyr rising in 1831, a sheet dipped in sheep’s blood was raised on Hirwaun common – the symbolic, first, red flag. Today, many visitors come to this area to explore the diversity of the Fforest Fawr geopark which covers the western side of the national park and contains mountains, moorland, woods and meadows. During May & June, to coincide with Europe’s Geoparks fortnight, all sorts of events are scheduled here; catering for those who just want to experience the natural beauty to those educationalists who use this as an outdoor classroom. 2008 also sees the 150th anniversary celebrations of the founding of St Lleurwg's church in Hirwaun.
