Aberdare is a busy town in the Cynon Valley in southern Wales, just 23 miles from the city of Cardiff, and is home to over thirty one and a half thousand people. It dates far back into the pages of history with ancient burial sites, Cairns and standing stones nearby that still survive today. From humble beginnings the town grew into a strategic and pulsating centre of iron and tin production, and was later known for it's mass of coal mines which swelled the population by thousands in the 19th Century, it's legacy of coal mining is woven deep into the very heart of this town remnants of which can be glimpsed in Dare Valley Country Park where skeletons of coal mines remain, once a scarred landscape from the activity below, is now re-planted and touched by nature's beauty. Victorian architecture that hails from a grand era is peppered throughout the town and links with the past, there's shops in abundance, and restaurants to keep the choosiest of visitor happy, and of course the beautiful countryside and close proximity of the memorable Brecon Beacons are just a few tempting reasons to visit this intriguing industrial town that was home to the first ever National Eisteddfod.
