Montgomery has always been an historically important town situated in the Welsh Marches between Wales and England and is possibly one of the prettiest towns in Wales. That is not to ignore the fact that historically Montgomery was a battleground, its castle being built in around 1223 by Henry III, whilst in the surrounding area there is evidence of several iron age hill forts, a Roman fort, Offa’s Dyke and a Welsh castle as well as two Norman castles. Why the military interest in the area? Montgomery lies strategically close to a narrow crossing of the River Severn and this formed not only a route for trade but also communication and whoever controlled the crossing therefore controlled trade and communications. Today Montgomery is altogether a quieter place that is relaxed about its history which provides the visitor with a wide variety of interesting architectural features. The castle was, at the end of the Civil War, described by the parliament of the time as a continuing threat and was subsequently demolished, some of the materials found their way into the houses that were subsequently built in the area – today the castle remains are under the protection of CADW. With its market square and interesting old buildings, the traditional Montgomeryshire style of half timber black and white construction still very much in evidence, Montgomery is a town that continues to rely heavily on the agricultural industry but where visitors are always made to feel more than welcome and appreciate not just the town itself but the surrounding countryside
