Machynlleth - usually shortened to “mach” as most non-welsh speakers tend to mangle the pronunciation, is at the junction of The A487 and A489 in Powys. This small, (population 2000) friendly town, in the shadow of the Cambrian Mountains, provides an ideal base to explore some of the most beautiful scenery in rural Wales. It was here in 1404 that Owain Glyndwr – the Welsh hero Prince held his parliament . Parliament House now hosts an exhibition dedicated to him. Also visit Celtica - a multi exhibition centre exploring the culture of the Celts - children will particularly like the Tir na nOg soft play area. Machynlleth has a museum of modern art , MOMA Wales at The Tabernacle, a former Wesleyan Chapel - admire the Taliesin Mosaic . It’s well worth visiting in August during the week long annual festival which includes jazz, drama and other eclectic performances. , The Centre for Alternative Technology - or CAT - was set up 25 years ago, close to Machynlleth, on the site of a former slate quarry .It describes itself as "an environmental charity aiming to inspire, inform and enable people to live more sustainably” Fun and information for the eco-friendly here.
