Llangammarch Wells is located in mid Wales and lies on the River Afon approximately 8 miles west of Builth Wells and is one of the smallest of the four local spa towns. To the south east there is Mynydd Eppynt – wise to steer clear of this though as it is used for Army Training! It is the meeting point of two other rivers, the Cammarch and Irfon and historically was used by drovers (it still is today ; now they use quad bikes) the major expansion of the town occurred with the coming of the railways in 1863 when it gained popularity as a spa town. For the Welsh people though this town is renowned for one person – John Penry, John believed that the Welsh people needed a Welsh bible and so set about producing one, much to the annoyance of the then Archbishop of Canterbury who had John imprisoned. He eventually escaped to Scotland but his passion was for the gospel to be preached in Wales in Welsh and on returning to London he again set about this task. Arrested for his beliefs John Penry was executed in March 1593. Today the spa is closed and this small has a strong sense of community spirit, indeed when the Alexander Hall was being sold, it had been used as a community centre for many years, the residents established an Action Group and are today renovating for local community use. It may have lost its spa but as a quiet Welsh town that is readily accessible it does have its attractions for those that crave the peace and quiet.
