Lying just South of the Eastern Range of the Brecon Beacons and within the Brecon Beacons National Park, in the shadow of the Black Mountains nestling alongside the River Usk and within its valley lies the picturesque market town of Crickhowell with a local population of around 2,000 people. Evidence of settlement here dates back as far as the Iron Age where settlers built a fort at the top of Crug Hywel (Table Mountain), there is evidence of Roman settlement nearby and the Normans left their mark as the remains of a bailey castle are evident today. The best known feature of the town is its bridge, spanning the River Usk, built in the 16th century the bridge traverses the river on thirteen splendid arches and is probably the most photographed architectural feature in the village! Interestingly from one side of the river all thirteen arches are visible whilst from the other just twelve of these magnificent arches are visible. It is no wonder that Crickhowell is so popular with visitors, the centre provides an interesting variety of traditional local shops, stores and local amenities to cater for those who visit this attractive and convenient Welsh village nestling within national Parkland.
