Kilchrenan is a village in Argyll and Bute in Scotland situated at the foot of the munro, Ben Cruachan, close to Loch Awe. Kilchrenan is surrounded by unspoilt scenic landscapes, lochs and mountains and is a popular tourist destination with holiday homes and forest cabins, hotels, inns, shops and amenities and plenty places to eat. Scenic Loch Awe is a fresh-water loch of historical interest with many ancient burial cairns dating back to Neolithic settlers and Cannogs or man-made islands dating back to 500BC. There are many walks in the area and the loch is popular for fishing with an abundance of trout and pike. Ben Cruachan stands 1119m high, north of the village and is regularly visited by hill-walkers, climbers and nature-watchers with a variety of wildlife in the area including golden eagles and Ospreys. The five-star Cruachan Visitor Centre is housed in a man-made cavern inside Ben Cruachan. There are walking tours to Oban, the historic Kilmartin Glen with standing stones, stone circles and castles and Dunadd with an ancient Hill Fort and the site where the first kings of Scotland were crowned. Attractions include the Kilmartin House Museum of Ancient Culture with interesting archaeological displays and the Glen Nant National Nature Reserve with forest walks, nature and bird-watching.
