Inverkip is an ancient coastal village in Inverclyde, Scotland situated at the mouth of the River kip where it flows into the Firth of Clyde opposite Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula with Greenock five miles north-east. The monks of Paisley Abbey built a church here in 1188 and the village was made Burgh of Barony before the Act of Union of 1707. Inverkip was well-known as an alleged centre for witchcraft during the 1600’s, with Alexander Dunrod believed to be a practising warlock who died under mysterious circumstances. Historically interesting features include the ruins of the 15th century Ardgowan Castle lying in the estate of the Ardgowan House built in 1798 and the Parish Church dating from 1804. The railway station arrived in 1865 and is still in operation on the Inverclyde Line. The village developed into a popular Clydeside Resort for tourists. Inverkip village is a popular seaside resort with shops, bars, restaurants and a variety of holiday accommodation. The large marina called Kip Village is now well-known as a yachting centre attracting boat-owners. Attractions include Lunderston Bay an idyllic picnic spot and the Cardwell Nursery Garden Centre with café, bar and restaurant. The Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park is ideal for walking, cycling and sight-seeing with woodland walks, nature trails a Ranger Service, café and gift shop. Trout fishing is available at the Ardgowan Fishery.
