There are not many towns you can say this about, but visit Inveraray and you’ll probably end up in jail. No, the town isn’t lawless; its main attraction is its 19th century jail. The jail housed both male and female prisoners and administered justice from its own courthouse. Situated in the bosom of Argyll, Inveraray looks out to the photogenic Loch Fyne. The town we see today was built on what was known as ‘Gallows Foreland’ and its appearance has remained almost unchanged from 1820, when the Duke of Argyll’s plans for the town were finally completed. A change of pace from the jail’s ‘Torture, Pain And Damnation’ exhibit, Inveraray Castle is a wonderful mix of Gothic, Palladian and Baroque architecture. Completed in 1789 for the Fifth Duke of Argyll, the castle is fringed by 16 acres of garden and woodland. No trip to Inveraray would be complete without visiting the castle’s splendour. Campanologists, or bell ringers, will take great interest in the 126 foot bell tower of Inveraray’s All Saints’ Church. Its bells, cast in 1920, weigh nigh on eight tonnes, requiring ten people to ring them. The Inveraray Bells are open from mid-May to September and offer views of both town and loch. Accommodation is plentiful in the town with options of bed and breakfast, self catering and hotels. Once you’ve been housed, you’ll need fed and watered. A summer afternoon supper of fish and chips, eaten on the grass lawns by Inveraray pier is hard to beat. A short drive along the A83 to the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar is rewarded with world renowned seafood. For an aperitif, a visit to Loch Fyne Whiskies will warm the cockles of your heart. A cruise down Loch Fyne can be taken from Inveraray pier, and old salts of all ages can board the Arctic Penguin and visit the Inveraray Maritime Heritage Museum.
