Dervaig is an ancient village on Mull, an island in the Inner Hebrides off the coast of Argyll, in the Argyll and Bute region of Scotland, Dervaig is situated to the north of the island, 7 miles west-south-west of Tobermory at the head of Loch Cuan. The name Dervaig translated from old Norse meaning ‘good inlet’ and would indicate Vikings may have settled here although there is evidence of even earlier settlers with a number of standing stones and remains of an ancient fort close to the village. A church was built c1200 encouraging a settlement to develop, however, the current village of Dervaig dates back to 1799 as a planned village laid out by the Laird of Coll as a single street lined with cottages with their own gardens. Two inns, a shop, a bakery, a smithy and a post office were in operation by the end of the 1800’s. Dervaig is a tranquil village surrounded by picturesque scenery and is a popular tourist destination, there is holiday accommodation, shops and an inn which opened in 1608. The Inter Island Cruises operate from Dervaig for whale-watching, wildlife and island sight-seeing boat tours. Nearby is the Tobermory Distillery with visitor centre and guided tours and Balamory the location of a well-known children’s television programme.
