Ascog Bay is situated in a small north facing inlet on the shoreline in the middle of the historic village of Ascog, on the Isle of Bute in the Argyll and Bute district of Scotland situated 1.5 miles south-east of Rothesay; the main town on the Island. The Isle of Bute has several archaeological sites including standing stones, stone circles and a vitrified Iron Age fort; ancient finds are displayed in the Bute Museum. Ascog Bay has a beautiful beach and is surrounded by charming houses and villas. It is an ideal holiday resort with local shops and amenities, restaurants, tea-rooms and holiday accommodation in the area. On the raised site at the north end of the bay is a hotel and conference centre which was once a girls’ school built in 1900. Other historically interesting buildings include The Ascog Church at the south end of the bay dating from c1800, Ascog House dates back to 1678, Ascog Lodge was built in 1820 and a popular visitor attraction is Ascog Hall dating from 1844 with the beautifully restored Victorian Fernery and Gardens Other attractions include the remains of the unusual circular 12th century Rothesay Castle, standing in Rothesay surrounded by a moat, and the Bute Highland Games are held at the end of August each year.
