Seamill in North Ayrshire as its appellation suggests is a coastal settlement, originally named for the watermill there which ground grain in the 17th century and maybe even earlier, the building still in evidence if not operation. The A78 coast road passes through the village. Although officialdom has attempted to merge Seamill into adjacent West Kilbride, it is thought of locally as a separate place, though its symbiotic relationship with its neighbour is demonstrated by that large village’s golf course being located in Seamill – a traditional and well-regarded links course by the way. In the late 19th century what had been a rather untouched rural spot changed character, its obvious natural resources utilised in creating a small health and seaside resort based around a hydrotherapy establishment which is now a conference centre and spa hotel. Other fine Victorian buildings can be seen here too. Those natural resources were its location by the sea, a pleasant and extensive sandy beach along Ardneil Bay within which the village sits, curving up to the fishing village of Portencross, and the beautiful views westward. From Seamill the Isle of Arran and particularly Goat Fell on its eastern coast can generally be seen across the Firth of Clyde; Ailsa Craig likewise offers a feast for the eyes; and in the right conditions the sunsets are spectacular.
