The former Burgh of Saltcoats is a port and seaside resort town on the west coast of Scotland, south-east of Ardrossan in the Cunninghame district of North Ayrshire. Saltcoats is part of the ‘Three towns’ along with Ardrossan and Stevenston, awarded Burgh of Barony status in 1528. Saltcoats is well-know as being the location of the fictional town of ‘Finport’ in the BBC programme ‘Still Game’. Saltcoats began as the late medieval salt-producing and fish-curing village, the name deriving from the industry of salt-panning, salt was extracted from sea-water in clay-built ‘cotts’ or huts along the beach, salt was manufactured in small pans and kettles. The harbour built in 1680 ensured the town developed as a port trading in salt, fish and coal. Architecturally interesting structures include the town-house with a spire dating from 1825 and the Parish church; 1774.The nearby North Ayrshire Museum displays relics of the towns nautical past and on the archaeology, costume, transport, culture and country life with a reconstructed traditional Ayrshire cottage interior. The town has shops and amenities, hotel, and holiday accommodation. Saltcoats is popular with tourists; with its beautiful beaches, walks and cycle-paths. Nearby, Eglinton Country Park offers a range of activities including fishing and horse-riding.
