The Ayrshire village of Dreghorn sits between Kilmarnock to the east and Irvine, a shade closer, to the west; and is also sandwiched between the Irvine River and Annick Water. Once a mining centre, also known for its manufacture of bricks, it is now more of a dormitory settlement for the larger towns around it. Farming has always been significant in the area, and the village lies in a north-south belt of open, mainly dairy, farmland. Dreghorn is easily accessible by car: the A71 is just south of the place, and the A78 coastal road – which leads to Prestwick Airport just a 15 minute drive distant – is to the west. Sadly its station like so many others disappeared in the 1960s, though that loss also meant the gain of some pleasant open spaces for the village. The district is dotted with golf courses, the most famous of which is Royal Troon, with plenty of municipals and less famous links for more modest players too. Most of the architecture we see today in Dreghorn dates from the 19th and 20th centuries, which belies the incredible antiquity of the village – thought by some to be the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Britain. That claim is based on the discovery of remains of structures including a deep well dating back some 5000 years. Its other two great claims-to-fame are the octagonal church, an unusual late Georgian structure; and being the birthplace of John Boyd Dunlop, the vet who invented pneumatic tyres.
