Cumnock is a historic market town in East Ayrshire in the south-west of Scotland situated where the River Glaisnock meets the Lugar Water. Awarded burgh of barony in 1509, the town has evidence of covenanting history with many graves and memorials as testament. A famous resident is said to be William Wallace with his home in Glen Afton. The town grew in the 1800’s with its coal-mining industry and the production of the delicate finely crafted Cumnock snuff-boxes; beautiful small decorative plane-tree wooden boxes. Cumnock is surrounded by scenic farmland and is a popular tourist destination with hotels, B&B’s, self-catering cottages, a busy town centre, shops, coffee-shops, award-winning restaurants and the Baird Institute; a history centre and museum. Historical features include the Mercat Cross dating from1703, the impressive orange/red stone Town Hall built in1885, the Old Church built 1867 and Crichton Church built in 1899. The ruins of the medieval Auchinleck Castle are on the sandstone cliff-top on the banks of the River Lugar and the ruins of the15th century Terringzean Castle stand on a raised bank overlooking the Lugar. Nearby in Kilmarnock is the14th century Dean Castle and Country Park with woodland walks, adventure playground, pet-corner, visitor centre, tea-room and gift-shop. There are six local golf-courses and a dry ski-slope at Newmilns nestled in the countryside amongst pine trees.
