Yetholm is a historic village in the Borders region of Scotland situated a mile from the Border with England, approximately a quarter of a mile across the Bowmont Water from its twin village of Kirk Yetholm and 6 miles south-east of Kelso. The name Yetholm means ‘Gate Town’ and would have started as a settlement post 1500 due to the cross border wars between the Scottish and English troops. Yetholm is well-known as the home of the Yethom Gypsies who used the border to disappear when under threat. The Romany House stands in the village and a Gypsy Memorial sits on Kirk Yetholm Green. The village is surrounded by beautiful scenery in the foothills of the Cheviots and has a number of thatched cottages and houses, shops and amenities, a hotel, self-catering accommodation and places to eat. Yetholm is a popular tourist destination particularly with walkers as it sits on the ‘St Cuthberts Way’ a 62 mile footpath from Melrose Abbey to Lindisfarne. The starting point of the ‘Pennine Way’ is at Kirk Yetholm, this long distance footpath stretches 268 miles north to Edale in Derbyshire. The famous Kelso Race-course and Floors Castle are in nearby Kelso, the town also has a swimming pool and an ice rink. The Border Abbey Tours are organised driving tours designed to visit the many Abbeys in the area.
