Stobo is a small historic village in the Borders region of Scotland situated five miles west of Peebles. An early Celtic church once stood at Stobo and the Stobo castle site, the castle was built close to the River Tweed in 1805-11 for the Montgomery family and is now a well-known residential health spa offering numerous relaxation, health and beauty treatments. Stobo is a tranquil village surrounded by beautiful country scenery with rolling hills and waters abundant with fish popular with walkers, cyclists and anglers. It is an ideal resort for touring the Borders and Edinburgh areas with a range of holiday accommodation, shops and plenty places to eat. Attractions include the Dawyck Botanic Garden, a conservation area with a collection of trees, shrubs, azaleas and rhododendrons; the garden is also home to a variety of wildlife including red squirrels and woodpeckers. The gardens offer various trails including the Beech Walk with a tree top view of Dawyck and the Tweed Valley and the Scottish Rare Plant Trail. There are driving tours to visit the many Border Abbeys including the great Abbeys at Kelso, Dryburgh, Jedburgh and Melrose. There are also many castles, country houses and estates. The local Highland Games are held in Peebles each September.
