Gordon is a small historic village in the Borders region of Scotland situated 8 miles north-west of Kelso. The village was developed in the 19th century due to the new road and rail networks being built at the time. Surrounded by the picturesque rolling countryside of the Scottish Borders, Gordon is a popular destination for tourists and an ideal base for touring the Berwickshire attractions with hotels, holiday accommodation, shops and places to eat in and around the area. Attractions include the Georgian Mellerstain House; this historic house was built in 1725 by William and Robert Adam, it is open to the public displaying the impressive interior decoration, furniture and art, with collections from famous artists including Van Dyck, and Gainsborough. In the grounds there is a lake; terraced Italian style gardens; a tea-room offering home-made food and a gift-shop. Nearby stands the now roofless but interesting Greenknowe Tower built in 1581, not as a fortified dwelling as most Scottish Tower Houses were, but a fashionable residence with interior decoration features, wide windows and large rooms built on top of each other connected by the spiral staircase. There are driving tours to see the great Border Abbeys including Jedburgh and Kelso, Kelso is also home to Floors Castle; the largest inhabited Scottish castle and the well-known race-course
