Duns is a historic Burgh town in the Borders region of Scotland situated 15 miles west of Berwick-Upon-Tweed, granted Burgh of Barony in 1490. The town dates back to c1000 with the remains of an Iron Age hill fort built on the rounded hill Duns Law standing 218m high. Duns was regularly caught up in many cross border battles between the Scottish and English troops and the original town was destroyed in 1544, 1545 and 1558. Duns Castle was built in 1320, although the current structure dates to c1820 and stands in parkland to the north of the town sited west of Duns Law. Historically interesting features include the Mercat Cross, the 18th century Parish Kirk and the early 19th century Tolbooth House. Jim Clarks Museum houses a collection on the local World Champion racing driver and Manderston House is an elegant Edwardian country house which featured in a TV programmes focusing on the life of the residents. The market town is surrounded by beautiful countryside scenery, and is a popular tourist destination with shops, hotel, pubs and places to eat. There are walking trails in the 190 acre Duns Castle Nature Reserve, countryside walks around the local villages and the Duns Town Trail which is 3 miles long, takes approximately 2 hours to complete and tours all the local historic sites.
