St Monans is a village situated between Elie and Pittenweem in the East Neuk of Fife. It sits on a hill overlooking the Forth estuary, with scenic views of the Bass Rock, Isle of May and over to North Berwick. The picturesque village has a lovely mix of historical buildings alongside the shops, restaurants, hotel and Internet café. There is an abundance of fish merchants and fish-smokehouses Salt, coal and fishing were the chief industries for many years and while it still remains a fishing community, it is largely a centre for tourism and boatbuilding. The natural tidal harbour was improved by a pier in1865 and it was given Burgh status in 1933. East of the village a stands a windmill tower, once used to pump the water from the sea to the 18th century saltpans where they evaporated seawater to make salt, it is now a visitor centre, open during summer months. Above the windmill is the Coal Farm previously the site of the colliery. Nine saltpans were built along the shore between 1772 and 1774. The Parish Church sits to the west of the village on the edge of the sea and has many features of architectural interest. Westward along the coast there are the ruins of Newark Castle a 16th century manor. To the east of the harbour is a caravan park.
