Situated on the north-east coast of Fife, St Andrews is a former royal burgh, internationally renowned for its historical and religious heritage. St. Andrews is Scotland’s oldest University town famously known for its associations with world golf. The town is easily explored on foot with a mix of University buildings found alongside shops and restaurants. The West Sands is a beautiful beach used as a location for the movie Chariots of Fire. Named after the Patron Saint of Scotland, St. Andrews was the ecclesiastical capital of Scotland from mediaeval times to the reformation. Saint Rule is said to have brought the Apostles’ remains westwards and landed at this location in the 8th century. The University of St Andrews was founded in 1412, the first in Scotland and the third oldest in Great Britain. The historical Castle ruins date back to the year 1200 though the remains are mainly 16th Century. The Cathedral also lies in ruins and in the grounds stands St Rule’s Tower, at 108 feet tall it marks the site guiding pilgrims to the place of Saint Andrew’s relics. Other historical sights include the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity, Chapel of the Blackfriars and the Martyrs Monument. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club founded here in 1754, over looks the first tee of the Old Course, the favourite venue of The Open Championship, oldest of the major golf championships. There are 7 other links courses in the area. Opposite is The British Golf Museum displaying a variety of golfing facts including the earliest surviving rules. Other leisure and sporting facilities are the New Picture House Cinema and The East Sands Leisure Centre, on the outskirts of the town. The Sea Life Centre is also a family favourite with its extensive collection of fish, rock pools and seals.
