The new town of Glenrothes was designated in 1948, in the centre of Fife occupying an area of natural beauty in east central Scotland. Glenrothes is an industrial town situated between Markinch and Leslie, astride the River Leven. Planned as a Garden City with landscaped gardens and low-rise suburban layouts, only the town centre has tall buildings. Glenrothes provides interesting examples of recent 20th century architecture including murals, artwork and sculptures. The Riverside Park was created in the grounds of the stately home, Leslie House. Other historic stately homes Balgeddie House and Balbirnie House are now luxury Hotels. Remains of ancient stone circles can be seen at Balbirnie and 2km north-east of town at Balfarg is the ancient ceremonial monument the ‘henge’ dating back to c.3000 BC. Three of the town’s earliest churches St. Pauls, St Margarets and St Columba’s are listed buildings. Kingdom Shopping Centre fills the areas south side with many chain stores, shops, cafes, restaurants, The Rothes Halls theatre, Public Library and bowling alley. Outside there are pubs, bars, night club, a bingo hall, hotels and various other amenities. The sports centre contains an international sized swimming pool, squash courts and fitness rooms. There are tennis courts and putting green. Glenrothes has two golf courses, Glenrothes and Balbirnie.
