The Third Reich’s blitzkrieg, the demise of shipbuilding, and the closure of the Singer sewing-machine fac-tory: Clydebank’s survived them all. The Clydeside town on the western extremity of Glasgow’s tentacular reach has proved itself to be an indomi-table settlement that has enjoyed its industrial heyday, and awoke from decline to witness the green shoots of economic recovery. The John Brown shipyards employed thousands in Clydebank – the River Clyde was the centre of world shipbuilding. As Scotland enjoyed the boom, Clydebank reverberated to the sounds of heavy industry, cranes silhouetted against the skyline. Of course, during the Second World War, Adolf Hitler’s Luftwaffe did their level best to stop the production of ships and ordnance in the Clyde, and Clydebank got the worst of it. In 1941 it was almost levelled, but stood firm under the German attack. Seduced by Clydebank’s excellent transport links, including canal, river, road and rail – plus, most impor-tantly, an abundance of land to build on – I M Singer and Co built a massive plant in the Kilbowie area of town, the footfall of thousands of people commuting to the factory was enough to require a railway station of its own. At the peak of Singer’s production, Clydebank was manufacturing up to 80 per cent of the world’s sewing machines, employing over ten thousand people in the process. The company’s post-war fortunes were not as sparkling. Competition from the Far East and Europe eroded Singer’s market share. Singer began to run at a loss, cutting its workforce by two-thirds in the ‘60s, and after Britain’s perilous economic climate of the late ‘70s, it finally succumbed to its debts; the plant closed in 1980. The Kilbowie site did not go waste though, the vacant factory buildings were pulled down, upon which Clyde-bank Business Park stands in its place.
