Banff is an ancient Royal Burgh town on the west bank of the Moray Firth coast-line on north-east side of Scotland, situated one mile from Macduff, separated by a seven arched bridge over the River Deveron; built in1779. Banff’s charter as a Royal Burgh dates from 1163 confirmed by Robert the Bruce in 1324. Banff is well-known for cliff top paths, hidden coves and interesting architecture. Robert Burns visited Banff in 1780 and wrote McPherson’s Farewell. Banff, originally was a port but was silted up in the 1800’s, is a traditional Scottish town of period character with fine town houses and harbour. Banff is popular with tourists offering a variety of historical attractions including the restored 16th century Inchdrewer Castle, the Pre-reformation church ruins near the harbour, St. Mary’s Parish church built1790, Trinity Alva church built 1844, the Neo-classical Banff academy built 1836 and the Town house built 1796 with tapering clock steeple. The Georgian, Duff House was built c.1735 and now serves as part of the National Gallery of Scotland displaying furnished rooms and art-work. The town has a range of restaurants, pubs, holiday accommodation, hotels and caravan parks, beaches with panoramic sea views and dramatic sun-sets. Activities include golf courses, walks, cycle-paths and fishing in the Deveron.
