Castletown is a small village located on the north-coast of Caithness in the Highlands of Scotland situated five miles east of Thurso on the south-side of Dunnet Bay. Castletown was a planned village laid out by James Traill to provide housing for the workers at the local flagstone quarries. The harbour was built in 1820 to ship flagstones all over the world and the village was completed in 1825. During World War II Castletown was home to a military airfield, the base lay a few miles east of the village. The village has a hotel, a general store and local amenities. To the north-east of the village is Dunnet Bay with a beautiful stretch of sandy beach, the beach footpath was added in 2000. To celebrate Castletown’s industrial heritage The Flagstone Trail was laid out with its starting point west of the harbour near the ruin of the old windmill, used to drain water from the quarry, before being replaced by steam-power in 1860. Nearby is the ruin of the large Castletown Mill built in 1818 to process the locally grown corn. To the north sheltering Dunnet Bay is the Dunnet Head mainland Scotland’s most northerly point, the Dunnet Head Educational Trust, in Thurso, has an information service with café, internet facilities fishing permit information and a library.
