Waternish (or Vaternish) is a historic district on the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland situated on the peninsula to the north-west of the Isle with Loch Dunvegan to the west and Loch Snizort to the east. ‘Waternish’ comes from the Norse for ‘Vatnenes’ meaning ‘headland of the pond’ the area is made up of the small hamlets of Trumpan, Gillen, Hallistra, Hallin, Stein and Lusta all influenced by a mix of Gaelic and Viking culture. Well-known as the homeland of the historic Clan MacLeod, the area is steeped in Scottish Folklore; access to Waternish is across the Fairy Bridge, believed to be the site where the magical Fairy Flag was bestowed upon the Chief of the Clan MacLeod. With Ben Geary standing 284m high and stunning views across to the Outer Isles, Waternish is a popular tourist resort particularly for outdoor activities; it has the oldest inn on Skye dating from 1790, self-catering and b&b accommodation, an award winning sea-food restaurant, shops and amenities. Historic sites include the Dunhallen prehistoric stronghold and Rubha Dubh the site of an ancient battle between the MacLeods and the MacDonalds. Visitor attractions include Scotland’s only Exhibition Tannery and Arts and Crafts studios and galleries. There is a picturesque walk to the lighthouse at Waternish Point, which is an idyllic spot to watch whales, dolphins and seabirds in their natural habitat
