Quothquan is an ancient village in south Lanark in Scotland in the parish of Libberton 2 miles south from Libberton village on the eastern side of the River Clyde, 3 km north-west from Biggar, 6km south-east from Lanark and 31 km from Peebles in the Scottish Borders. Quothquan is pronounced ‘Couth- Boan’ and means the beautiful hill. The village is named after a local hill, the Quothquan Law which stands 335m above the River Clyde topped by the remains of an iron-age hill-fort. A large stone which has been hollowed in the middle known as ‘Wallace’s Chair’ sits on the Law and is thought to be where William Wallace held his conferences prior to the Battle of Biggar. The village is surrounded by beautiful scenery and wildlife and is a popular tourist destination with holiday accommodation, shops, restaurants and many attractions in the area. Historically interesting features include the ruined Quothquan Church; its aisle is the burial site of the Chancellor family, a new replacement church was built at Libberton in 1812. Attractions include The New Lanark Heritage Centre, the Albion small motor Museum in Biggar, the Biggar Gasworks Museum and the Gladstone Court Museum. Activities in the area include walking and hill-walking on Quothquan Law, fishing, horse-riding, golfing and hot-air ballooning.
