Runnymede is an historic location of meadows and woodland, that's positioned in the County of Surrey. Close by the River Thames snakes its way through rich green countryside and water meadows. The area is steeped in history from King Alfred the Great's time when the ancient Witan Council used to meet here, to the famous signing of the Magna Carta. At the time of King John the influential Barons revolted against the King after several mistakes were encountered with his policies with very high taxes and unreasonable demands. It was decided, eventually, that the Charter was necessary in order to take some of the Monarch's control away and rights be given to the people. A large crowd gathered at Runnymede, Barons, Courtiers, King John and his entourage, and even the Arch Bishop of Canterbury was there in the Summer of 1215. There are four remaining copies of the Charta, which was originally written in Latin, it was the first constitutional document signed, and the base of our laws and constitution today. Runnymede is also renowned for its monuments that commemorate J.F. Kennedy, the US President who was brutally murdered in the 1960's, and, on top of the hill the memorial to the Air forces of the Allied Forces who perished in WWII.
