The ancient village of Churt can be found about 6 miles from it‚s nearest railway stations at Haslemere and Farnham, on the A287 to Hindhead and the A3 main road between London and Portsmouth. The villagers are a tight traditional community which adds character to the already appealing medieval timber framed houses and small 19th century stone church. Churt has three pubs, one of which is idyllically situated on the shore of the largest of the Frensham Ponds, just round the corner from the sailing club. On the opposite shore is a sheltered sandy beach with a car park making this area ideal for family picnics. Churt is surrounded by some of the best horse riding countryside in Surrey, so don‚t be surprised to encounter many famous riders whilst out walking. The nearby three small wooded hills of the Devil‚s Jumps tend to be fairly free of horses so best for dog owners and horse-phobic walkers. Be careful driving round Churt as this is a very rural farming area and often the narrow winding roads are muddy and rutted or blocked with cattle or tractors. Frensham Common is a wonderful place to ride horses, with five square miles of a mixture of heather-covered scrubland and woodland surrounding the two lakes - Frensham Big Pond and Little Frensham Pond. Cairns dotted along the top of the haunted and panoramic King‚s Ridge, in the centre of the common remind that man lived here in pre-historic times. The common‚s network of sandy bridle paths through woodland and heathland are ideal for hacking along any time of year plus cross country fences have been erected alongside many of the bridle paths to make hacking more interesting for the experienced horse rider. Many equestrian centres offer escorted rides round the common for visitors without their own horses.
