Charlwood is a pretty village on the far eastern edge of the Surrey Hills, near the border between Surrey and Sussex. The village is ideally situated for car drivers, with easy access to the M23 and M25 motorways as well as Gatwick Airport, attracting many visitors to the village‚s B&Bs and hotels. Though Charlwood has no rail station, the nearby town of Crawley provides rail links to London Victoria and the south coast. Being near the airport subtracts nothing from the Charlwood‚s charming 15-18th century cottages, listed buildings and lovely stone built church of St.Nicholas, which is well worth a visit. Built in the 11th century by the Normans and used ever since, it has an attractive interior with wooden roof beams, 13th century wall paintings, stained glass windows, and a nicely renovated medieval wooden chancel screen. Charlwood is surrounded by well kept farmland and attractive countryside including two large bluebell woods run by the Woodland Trust and open to the public. Other local attractions include Gatwick Aviation Museum and the very well preserved Lowfield Heath working windmill at the edge of the village, which both have eccentric opening hours but are suitable for all the family.
