Blairgowrie is the second largest town and parish in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, situated in the fertile farmland in the Strathmore Valley, 16 miles north-east of Perth. Blairgowrie is a tourist resort and market town, well known for its soft fruit growing industry, visitor attractions and holiday accommodation. The River Ericht flows through the town dividing Blairgowrie on the west bank and its twin burgh, Rattray on the east bank before arriving at the River Tay. Each is a separate parish with their own churches. The burgh has historically interesting buildings including the Castle of Clunie c1500, standing on the small island in nearby Loch Clunie; it is roofless but not ruinous. Newton Castle is a Z-plan dating 17th century and a mile west of town lays Ardblair Castle originally a 16th century L-plan, it retains its courtyard. Keathbank Mill hosts Scotland’s largest working water-wheel; it is also the heraldry museum, with a heraldic workshop and a model railway. Blairgowrie is situated at the south entrance to Glenshee, a popular resort for holiday makers enjoying skiing and hill-walking, hang gliding, pony trekking and golfing with three courses to choose from. Blairgowrie’s Recreation Centre caters for indoor sports and activities. Blairgowrie also benefits from a super cottage hospital that has a casualty dept open to all until 11pm.
