The ancient parish of Alyth is in the Perth and Kinross area of Scotland situated 11 miles west of Kirriemuir in Angus and 5 miles north-east of Blairgowrie on the southern slopes of the hills of the Forest of Alyth. The small burgh dates back to c1100 although possibly earlier as the remains of a large vitrified fort on Barry Hill are believed to be the place where Queen Guinevere was imprisoned by the Pictish King Mordred. Alyth was an important market town by 1760, when the Losset Inn was built, and the town was hosting several fairs every year. During the 1800’s Alyth grew with its textile industry and the railway arrived in 1861. Surrounded by rolling hills and picturesque scenery Alyth is an idyllic town, a popular tourist destination and an ideal base to tour the Blairgowrie area attractions, there are a variety of holiday accommodation, shops and places to eat out. Historically interesting features include the Packhorse foot-bridge spanning the Alyth Burn built c1550, the Mercat Cross dating back to 1607 and the Parish Church built in1839 with an interesting Pictish cross-slab in the vestibule. There is a folk museum with exhibits of the life and heritage of Alyth and at neighbouring Kirriemuir is the J.M. Barrie’s Birthplace and Peter Pan Experience.
