Knaresborough is a sizeable North Yorkshire market town, its population 14,740 at the last census. Located between Harrogate just a couple of miles to the west, and York, ten to the east, it makes a good base for visits to those larger settlements, but has plenty to recommend it to visitors as a destination in itself. With its own station, and located just a five minute drive from junction 47 of the A1(M), Knaresborough is easy to get to. The most notable man-made attraction in the town is its castle, a Norman building pulled down in part after a siege during the Civil War. As was so often the case with such demolitions, the townspeople were more than happy to lend a hand, and there are many buildings still standing that benefited from the use of stone looted from the fortification. There is still plenty to be seen of the building, however, and a fine museum attached to it. The town lies in a gorge, and has a stunning stone bridge crossing the River Nidd. The views down the gorge from the castle are particularly noted. While the River Nidd rushes cleanly through the town, there are some enjoyably murky aspects to its history. Knaresborough’s two most famous residents have a definite dark side. Mother Shipton, a seer supposedly born in a cave near the town (which claims to be the oldest visitor attraction in the country, operating as such it is said since 1630) became celebrated and not a little feared in Tudor times for her prophecies. And Eugene Aram, an innovative self-taught philologist of the 18th century, committed murder in the town and years later when the body was found was dragged back there for trial, found guilty, and executed. Beside Mother Shipton’s Cave is a quirk of geology and nature, the Petrifying Well, where the lime-rich water will coat and petrify objects left in the cascade. For a change from Knaresborough, and if neither York nor Harrogate appeal, the district around the town is dotted with picturesque villages, including Scotton, linked with gunpowder plotter Guy Fawkes, and Ripley with its wonderful castle.
