The North Yorkshire village of Hovingham is to be found in the Howardian Hills, a few miles to the south of the A170 and the North York Moors National Park. It is a village with those two vital amenities needed to give a rural settlement a heart and a soul: a good village pub, and a parish church. The Malt Shovel offers food as well as more liquid refreshment. All Saints’ Church provides a historical backcloth to the village, with a Saxon tower, doorway and wheel cross proof this is an ancient settlement. Going further back still evidence of Roman occupation has been found nearby. There are two contrasting attractions for visitors to Hovingham: a hall and a shed. Hovingham Hall is a Palladian building constructed according to his own design by Thomas Worsley, between 1750 and 1780. Either because of his love of equestrianism, or because this was to Worsley’s own design, the entrance is through the riding school. The ground in front of the house has been used for many cricket matches where top players have performed – in 1858 an All England team beat 22 players drawn from the village. In more recent times the greats of many Yorkshire sides have played there thanks to the fourth Sir William Worsley, one time captain and president of the county’s cricket club. The Hall is still a family home, and is only open for very limited periods – check if planning a visit. The shed is The Shed, a venue situated in the village for various innovative arts events, especially poetry and music, attracting creative talents from all over the country and beyond. Within ten miles of the village there are the market towns of Malton and Pickering, as well as a great range of historic properties: Nunnington Hall; Castle Howard; Newburgh Priory; and Duncombe Park.
