With a grand total of 1,180 residents at the last census Hawes is the capital of the Dales, centrally located within the National Park, and easy to get to via the A684 from the M6 to the west or the A1 to the east, though once off those arterial highways don’t expect to race there. The town’s name is said to mean the pass between the mountains, referring to Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, and at 850 feet it is the highest market town in the country. The town centre itself has not lost any charm, with grey stone cottages and grander buildings that once formed the backdrop for elements of the TV series All Creatures Great and Small, and there are plenty of small shops and places to eat for travellers to the area. But this is still very much a working town: there is a farmers’ mart as well as a Tuesday market; the biggest employer is the Wensleydale creamery; and most fascinating of all, there is a traditional rope-making company. The creamery and the rope-maker have facilities to welcome visitors. Walkers will love the area, which has a plethora of paths and out-of-the-way routes to explore. There are some serious hills for those equipped physically and practically to climb them – this is high up, and the weather can change rapidly, so be prepared. Hawes also stands on the 250-mile Pennine Way, and makes a comfortable way station for those attempting that epic trip. For those wanting to leave the car behind Hawes is only four miles from Garsdale station on the wonderful Settle-Carlisle line. Information can be garnered on the walks and other attractions at the National Park Visitor Centre in the town. One local sight not to be missed is Hardraw Force, England’s highest single-drop waterfall. Painted by Turner and visited by Wordsworth, this is something that has to be fitted in to any visit to Hawes.
