The market town of Guisborough stands at the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park, one of the few large settlements in the area – it had a population of 18,108 at the 2001 census. Although since local government reorganisation in the 1970s the town is officially in Cleveland, and these days it largely serves as a dormitory town for nearby Middlesbrough, Guisborough is still Yorkshire at heart. Guisborough was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and its greatest monument dates from Norman times. Gisborough Priory (the spelling is correct – several of the landmarks in the town retain the old form without the U) though in ruins is a majestic sight, illustrating that when Robert de Brus founded it for the Augustinians in 1119 the area was a very wealthy one. Access to the town is easy, as it is located on the A171 Middlesbrough to Whitby route, or drivers can use the A172 from the A19 to avoid Middlesbrough. The town still has its own style, with the main shopping area of Westgate retaining many shops of character, various other old streets leading off it repaying the explorer with similarly specialist outlets a world away from the identikit High Street too often found elsewhere. As well as the Priory sightseers may wish to visit Tockett’s Mill, a four-floor water-driver corn-mill restored to its past glory. Pinchinthorpe Hall Brewery is another venue of note in the area, brewing organic ales from its own spring water. The Cleveland Way passes the town to the south and east, but for those wanting less daunting hikes Guisborough Forest has trails criss-crossing it, and its own cliff – Highcliffe – where the ground rises steeply. And of course there are the innumerable walks of the National Park within easy reach to the south of Guisborough, and to the north the coast with many places of beauty worth seeking out.
