The peaceful hamlet of Dunsley is definitely a place to visit to escape the hurly-burly for a while. Dunsley is away from main roads, but easily accessible from both the A171 coastal route and the A169 that carves its way through the North York Moors to Whitby a mile or two to the west of the settlement. But for those staying there who want more than quiet, there is plenty on offer in the surrounding area. The major attraction in Dunsley is the elegant Dunsley Hall, built for a shipping magnate in the last full year of Victoria’s reign. Its mellow stone and confident architecture convey a feeling of solid Victoriana coupled with looking forward to a new era and the new century. Hidden away in trees in the village is an abandoned chapel that provides a rather sad if pretty counterpoint to the nearby Hall. Whitby is a short drive from Dunsley, with its lovely beaches and fascinating history – the Captain Cook museum is good for a rainy day, and for aficionados its associations with Bram Stoker’s Dracula can be explored. Further north up the coast and in easy reach of Dunsley, there is the seaside village of Sandsend, a resort in keeping with the idea of an old fashioned holiday by the sea, with pebble and sand beach and an air of Edwardian calm. For a more vigorous expedition the beautiful North York Moors are on the doorstep, with a huge range of hikes and scrambles available, or visits to the little villages dotted across the wild landscape – Goathland is particularly well-known because of its use in the TV series Heartbeat – before returning to the haven of Dunsley.
