On the A171 coast road between Scarborough and Robin Hood's Bay, Cloughton is a modestly sized village of just over 700 souls. The village is well located for visits to the traditional seaside resort of Scarborough just a couple of miles to the south, and the historic port of Whitby with its Bram Stoker and Captain Cook links 14 miles to the north. A stop-off at Robin Hood's Bay is also highly recommended, the Old Coastguard Station housing an aquarium explaining the natural history of the area. Inland there are the beautiful North York Moors with the fabulous walks that brings to the keen hiker, and very close at hand is Langdale Forest with numerous trails and picnic sites. In the village itself there are two pubs, and a quiet little country church, St Mary the Virgin. But it is the coast that is the big draw here, with extensive beaches in the area, Jurassic cliffs, birdwatching and beautiful views for those with a few minutes to enjoy them. The National Trust has its Coast Centre a few miles away at Ravenscar. For the children there are plenty of places to explore rockpools and - with a bit of luck and more care - fossils.
