The little village of Bainbridge sits just three miles from Hawes, the home of Wensleydale cheese, easy to reach as it is on the A684 that joins the M6 in the west and the A1 in the east. Askrigg, which in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small served as Darrowby, is located less than two miles to the north-east. Bainbridge was too small to have a church, but it was a great Quaker centre in the early days of that movement, and has a Meeting House of the solid simplicity that would be expected. The grey stone cottages are picturesque, and the Bain, supposedly England’s shortest river, drops down to the village from Semer Water to the south. In the village there is a two-tier weir that looks perilously close to some of the houses. The village green is extensive and of an indeterminate shape, and comes complete with seats and shady trees if you are in a contemplative mood, and stocks that would once have served for the more argumentative. There are the remains of a Roman fort, Verosidum, a very short stroll from the village on Brough Hill, and the Romans left a road here too, now a green route loved by walkers and mountain-bikers. For those who enjoy living history Bainbridge retains a quaint custom, these days a charming reminder of times past, but once of practical value to those out in the fields and on the hills nearby. Every night as the darkness gathers, between the end of September and Shrove Tuesday, one of the village worthies grasps an ox horn from its peg in the Rose and Crown by the village green and blows three times. In Norman times this would have called the shepherds back to the village, and guided any travellers still on the road to safe lodgings there.
