Polegate is an interesting town positioned between the South Downs and the Weald, in the county of East Sussex, and it is home to nearly eight thousand people. The town sits just five miles from the seaside resort of Eastbourne with its 1000' pier, and only four miles from the ancient Market town of Hailsham. From its humble beginnings the town grew and expanded during the 19th Century when it became home to many of the railway's workers who laboured laying the tracks linking the towns of Eastbourne and Hastings. After the closure of the line it became an attractive walk and cycle track known as the Cuckoo Trail where walkers and cyclists can enjoy their journey to Eastbourne or Heathfield. There are many pubs to sample a coffee or something a little stronger, restaurants in the town centre, and there is also a good choice of shops lining the High Street offering something different, and although surrounded by modern houses artists will enjoy the impressive windmill which was built in 1817 and is still working today. There is always the opportunity to venture into the great outdoors where walks through the stunning wooded countryside nearby is bound to please.
