Surrounded by the rolling hills of the South Downs, the village of Findon has managed to hang on to its identity despite the urban spread of Worthing, some 4 miles to the south. The village centre, called The Square, contains some fine 18th century flint and stuccoed fronted houses. The Gun Inn is built on the foundations of a 15th century Hall House, it was called the Muskett Gun in the 17th century; a little further down the High Street is the Findon Manor Hotel, originally the old Rectory dating from 1584. Cut off from the village by the A24 is the parish church of St.John, it has a large nave gable above two east gables and a shingled broach spire. Built of flint it was originally a 12th century cruciform church, a north aisle was added in the 13th century and a new roof in the 15th. the church was restored by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1867. Near the church is Findon Place built in the early 18th century and enlarged in 1786. A little to the west of the church are a small group of Neolithic Flint Mines and overlooking the village to the east is the Iron Age Hill Fort, Cissbury Ring. The annual Sheep Fair on Nepcote Green dates back to 1261, held in September the fair sold upwards of 20000 sheep in its heyday. The Foot and Mouth outbreak stopped the sheep sales but sheep are still shown in the Southdown Sheep Society`s annual show. Findon has a long association with horses and horseracing, including the 1867 Derby winner Hermit, and many National Hunt race winners.
