In the gentle hills just a mile or so beyond the northern extent of Luton the village of Streatley is something of a contrast to that urban centre. With a population of about 1700 the settlement can still, however, support a village hall, good pub with food and rooms, and a very quaint church. Streatley is easily accessed by car, sitting a very short distance to the west of the A6 trunk road or reached via little lanes from junction 12 of the M1. The nearest railway station is at Harlington about two miles away; and London-Luton Airport can be reached from the village via country roads bypassing the town or more directly on the A6 and Luton ring. St Margaret’s Church is the architectural highlight of the village, a pleasant jumble of styles and centuries set in a green churchyard. Its 15th century tower has a chimney-like staircase set on the southeast corner. To the west of Streatley Sundon Hills Country Park, run by the National Trust, allows for some leg-stretching in the Dunstable Downs; to the east within reasonable hiking distance there are four nature reserves noted for their birding, and an 18-hole golf course; and of course only minutes away by car is the bustling business centre of Luton.
