Stourbridge is to be found about 12 miles to the west of Birmingham on the very edge of the Black Country. A convenient location, close to Birmingham and yet far enough away to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Whilst it may not be the most picturesque of towns it is a town with big heart, some parts of the town can be quite industrial whilst the residential quarter has many fine Victorian houses set in suburban surroundings. Stourbridge takes its name from, quite simply, the bridge over the River Stour, and can trace its history back to 950AD. Coal and limestone had long been mined here but it wasn’t until the 17th century and the production of glass that was to see the start of a formal industrial being created. It was however the Industrial Revolution that was to contribute to the wealth of the local residents. Ironworks, nail and chain manufacturing, brickworks and heavy engineering transformed this area. Indeed the first train to run on rails in America was built here, The Stourbridge Lion first ran on rails in America in August 1829 and was produced here in Stourbridge. Today though Stourbridge is world famous for the quality of its glass, the local natural resources make this an ideal location and its reputation as the finest glass producer in the world is more than justified.
