Meriden is located between Coventry and Birmingham, in the County of Warwickshire, and in the centre of this pretty village is the village green the centrepiece being a stone cross. This cross represents the very centre of England and around the village green is a mix of old and new buildings. Possibly the most famous person from Meriden was Lady Godiva, she rode naked through the streets of Coventry, Lady Godiva and her husband were effectively lord and lady of the manor and whereas Leofric (Lady Godiva’s husband) was more interested in raising taxes Lady Godiva was more interested in trying to ease the financial burden of the people. Leofric wanted to continue raising taxes but Lady Godiva was against this so Leofric said that if his wife, Lady Godiva, were to ride naked through Coventry then he would reduce the taxes, and so a legend was created. Close to the Heart of England Way, a footpath some 100 miles long running from the Cotswolds to Cannock Chase, the view from this part of the footpath, known as the Meriden Gap, provides a truly panoramic vista of the City of Birmingham.
