In 1851 it was recorded that Harborne or Harborn as it was also known was a pleasant rural village situated around four miles south of Birmingham and with many neat houses. Home to Harborne Cricket Club founded around 1868 and has since 1874 been located at “The Avenue”, Old Church Avenue, this is in complete contrast to the rugby club which was established in 1995! One of the more interesting buildings in the area is that of Harborne Hall which has, through its history had many interesting uses, originally built as a private house for the daughter of local dignitary towards the end of the 18th century, many occupants later and during the First World War the hall was used as a hospital, later to become a convent and today a conference centre – but most importantly despite all this time and variety of owners the hall still retains all its splendour. Harborne is one of the more affluent areas, the High Street with its range of shops has not changed much (there was some restructuring of the high street in the 1960’s) but the town is very much as it was last century, St Peters Church – the tower being the most locally recognised feature and dating back in part to the 14th century, and then there is the Green Man – the first clubhouse for Harborne Rugby Club.
