Handsworth is to be found in the West Midlands and is town that until the coming of the Industrial Age relied on agriculture for its economic stability. Certainly Roman pottery has been found in the area but not enough to consider this a major settlement, the Anglo Saxons came, saw the heavily wooded areas and set about clearing some of the woods in order to set up their farms and it is from these beginnings that the village, as it was then, grew. Its growth is very much attributable to one man, Matthew Boulton, who in the 18th century set up the Soho Manufactory here in Handsworth famed for its crafted metal work. This saw the steady growth of the village as more people were attracted to the area, by 1851 the population was around 6,000 and by 1881 the population had climbed to 32,000. Together with its local Victorian architecture Handsworth has also passed on a musical legacy to the world with people like Joan Armatrading who lived in the area during the early 1960’s, the reggae group Steel Pulse who first got together at Handsworth Wood Boys School here in Handsworth and of course there is Steve Winwood and finally Carl Palmer – Carl the former drummer with supergroup he helped establish, Emerson Lake and Palmer.
