Bilston is set in the industrial heart of the Midlands, tracing its history back to Roman times when Beacon Hill was covered in oak forests, evidence of the Romans has been found in the form of coinage dating from Antoninus and Commodus which dates to around 192. In the early part of the 15th century coal had been discovered in the area and whilst there was some mining it wasn’t until the 18th century that Bilston underwent its transformation from an agricultural community to an industrial community. Coal from the area had long been transported to other adjoining towns and soon Bilston was exporting locally manufactured bricks. By the end of the 18th century Bilston had completely changed – no longer was the local economy reliant on agriculture it was now an industrial based economy. The Birmingham to Aldersley canal opened and together with the opening of the railways this encouraged new factories to open earning Bilston its place in the Black Country. The 20th century saw Bilston become an important industrial centre, Stewart and Lloyd’s Steelworks was the major local employer and eventually they were nationalised becoming the British Steel Corporation. As the 20th century wore on Bilston’s fortune changed – its reliance on a steel works and a metal working industry foundered, the area fell into a decline. New investment and new enterprises though seem to be providing Bilston with a new desire to succeed, new roads, new industries and new commercial developments are all breathing new life into what had become a drab area. The old way of life may have gone but a new and refreshing attitude is apparent, Bilston is once again on the road to success.
