West Wycombe village in the Chiltern Hills, is just west of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The picturesque buildings here date back to the 16th century with old pubs, interesting shops, tearooms and a garden centre. The only hotel here is the coaching inn The George and Dragon. The National Trust has owned this area since 1934. It is here that Sir Francis Dashwood, whose family home was at West Wycombe Park – the 18th century Palladian mansion with stunning Rococo landscaped gardens, founded the notorious Hellfire Club. The mansion is only open in the summer months but is often used as a film location, e.g. for “Top Gear”. Nearby, beneath the hill (an Iron Age Fort) on top of which is the vast and hexagonal Dashwood Mausoleum and the best vantage point for spotting Red Kites, is the spectacular West Wycombe Caves. These caves were formed naturally, but were then excavated more by hand in the 1750s to provide local employment and a meeting venue for the secret Hellfire Club. The caves are open daily all year and regularly frequented by Natterers, Pipistrelle and other bats. Also on top of the hill is the 18th century church of St Lawrence with it’s golden globe – a well-known landmark giving up to 8 people at a time panoramic views of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
