This large, pretty village in the Vale of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, was recently voted the 5th best place to live in Britain, featuring as the backdrop setting for “Midsomer Murders” amongst other TV programmes. Historically rich, Haddenham is an Anglo-Saxon name and listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. The village has many town traits, such as an air-strip, mainline railway station and an industrial area, but since a Royal Charter is needed and there is local opposition, the status of Haddenham probably won’t change. The village is famed for its 4 duck ponds, providing breeding sites for Aylesbury ducks, as well as for being 1 of only 3 remaining wychert villages. The sustainable construction method of our ancestors used a white clay and straw mixture, then topped with red clay tiles or thatched – a good example of this is the Methodist Church. The home of Vale "Real Ale" Brewery is here, offering 12 different home-brewed ales, as is St Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital, caring for ill and injured wild animals (open all year). Notley Abbey is a ruined abbey steeped in history and romance with gardens backing on to the banks of the River Thame (there is an admission charge). The local museum on the High Street tells the history of the village. Proximity to Aylesbury means shopping facilities and accommodation are limited but there is The Rose and Thistle hotel and some self-catering cottages on offer, as well as several pubs, some serving food too.
