On the A40 in Buckinghamshire, 20 miles north west of London, close to the M25/M40 motorway intersection but on the slope down to the River Thames at Eton is the village of Gerrards Cross. A fast rail connection to London Marylebone is provided by Chiltern Railways. The village only grew after this railway arrived in 1906 making it convenient to travel to the capital and Heathrow airport is just 12 miles away. With a population of 7352 and being predominantly rural (having 89% Green Belt land) this characterful village has a Common, which is a football pitch at weekends but used mostly for dog walking and recreation. The Common and those houses by it are a conservation area. There is also a network of local footpaths from the thriving centre and an 18-hole Golf club. Another public space is Bulstrode Camp, which contains the remainders of Iron Age defensive ramparts. The village centre has many facilities, including a cinema, shops, excellent schools, restaurants, pubs and hotels, namely The Bull built in 1688 and the award-winning Ethorpe Hotel.
